Chapter Sixteen

Homecoming

And James was home, back in Norhilm. The crowds of people, yelling and dodging as he slowed his horse enough to try to maneuver, were quite familiar. He saw masks everywhere—gang masks, family masks, guild masks. Most of the populace wore them as a daily statement of allegiance or fashion. The mostly wood houses and businesses around him, the gangs strutting through the streets, the poor men begging on the side of the road… even the well-built road itself. All were familiar.

James rushed through the city, exultant as he rode toward his goal. About ten minutes later, with the core now practically vibrating with suppressed power in his belt pouch, he reached the edge of the Nexus. The Nexus was the collapsed portion of the Old Town district, where an Earth spawn had burst from the earth—destroying the advanced sewer system—and been defeated by Leviathan, James’s granddad. But the holes and smashed houses remained, as well as entrances to the complex sewer system, where the most destitute found shelter and the gangs ran secret drug labs and human trafficking rings. Most of the gangs and the least desirable citizens of Norhilm lived here.

Isabel kept riding, heading in the direction of the Weary Horse Inn, but the rest of the group dismounted and started running toward the center of the Nexus, the point where the spawn had entered. They all had advanced athletic perks and had been training daily. James couldn’t help but notice the smooth, lean muscle in the legs of Flea, Anna, and Laurel. Even with a slight limp, Hive could keep up with their pace. Rax… well, Rax was bulging with muscles in places most people didn’t have places.

With minutes to spare, James and his crew entered the heart of the Nexus. As he did, he saw all the things he remembered—sickly people near death, prostitutes not much further from it, and gang members. So very many gang members. James mostly saw Xeril Night gang members—he could tell because each wore the octopus mask that marked them as a member of the gang—but he saw numerous other gangs around as well. Far more than he remembered.

Why so many?

James rushed to the center, and when he got there, he looked around. There were multiple pits across the ground, but the nearest ones didn’t have people in them. The mounds all had a gang-masked guard on top. And the half-broken buildings all around had a gang member or two as guards, most with bows or crossbows.

They’re guarding this, but why?

Then James noticed the line of obvious gang enforcers waiting outside the huge pit that marked the middle. They had masks from many different gangs, large and small, and all carried weapons of one sort or another. Most were male, and almost all had scars.

There was a sign set up that read, “2 Gold to Enter the Dungeon of the Meat Puppets.”

“Shit!” Flea whispered as the group came to a stop. “The Xeril Night set up one of their fake
